Creating Handmade Birthday Cards

I really like making hand made birthday cards and have been doing so now for around two decades. I find it tremendously pleasing, relaxing and rewarding to create my own personal handmade cards. It’s a really excellent way to chill out, by sitting with all of my papercrafts paraphernalia laid out in front of me and to really allow the creative juices to flow!

A handmade greeting card may be as elaborate or as straight forward as you require it to be. A very simple style can be quite stylish and very effective. Simple designs are great for first-timers to card making to begin with. Have a go with mounting a die-cut decoupage image on to a blank card along with a peel off sticker message to complete the greeting card, a super easy enough design to make with not a whole lot of gear required, whilst still being very beautiful and impressive.

After you have perfected simple designs, have a shot at adding to those ideas. Add in another decoration like a lace or perhaps a pre-made topper. Start incorporating background papers to a part or all the card blank and incorporate glittery or pearlised accents with decorative glues. Instead of a decoupage picture, have a go at rubber stamping an image onto a sheet of card, colour the rubber stamped image with coloured pencils or watercolour paints, trim close to the stamped image in a rectangular shape or square shape and then put that rubber-stamped picture on to the card blank. Your own ideas will swiftly grow into larger, better and more sophisticated designs. Using a very little time and effort you can actually develop many very eye-catching designs.

When you sit down to create a Birthday card, the first thing you’ll want to give thought to

is who the card is for. Is it for a teenager or an older person, will it be for a male or a female, what exactly are his or her’s interests and hobbies?. It’s always good to incorporate a little something personalized into the birthday card. If your card is designed for a golf player, a golf graphic, with golfing embellishments would make an excellent birthday card and also can show that a lot of thought has gone in to the card.

When you’ve determined your theme for your card, you need to decide on the colour palette. A colour scheme for the card is often driven by the colours in a decoupage image or maybe a ready to use decoration which you have previously chosen. Decide upon a couple of colours from the decoupage image or embellishment and use those colours through the entire card, colour co-ordinating all ribbons, embellishments or backing papers to those two colours. If you use a rubber stamped picture then you’ll be able to colour this image using your colour scheme and build on that scheme with colour co-ordinated extras.

To completely personalise your hand made birthday card, you can feature the person’s name within the theme of the card. This can be accomplished through the use of peel off sticker lettering, alphabet stamp lettering or should you have a steady hand, you’ll be able to hand write his / her name using a decorative ink or glitter glue.

Additionally printing an insert for your birthday card having a nice personalised message such as a poem or lovely message really finishes off your hand crafted birthday cards.
